Children's orthodontics in Cowbridge

Orthodontic treatment is often associated with the teenage years, but the optimal age for a first orthodontic visit is when children are aged around 8 or 9. Here at Cowbridge Dental Specialists we have brace options for children and teens of all ages and are specialists at treating young smiles.

Early orthodontic assessments

We can assess most children for dental issues between the ages of 8 and 10, a time when enough permanent teeth have emerged to determine their bite. Identifying problems early allows us to correct them before they worsen, ensuring your child's oral health is on the right track.

Early treatment means we can:

  • Guide incoming teeth into the proper position
  • Regulate the width of your child’s jaws
  • Reduce the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
  • Correct thumb-sucking habits

In many cases there may be no problems at all and we will only recommend treatment if it is truly best for them. We will be able to advise you on whether any treatment is necessary and discuss suitable options, following your child’s free consultation with our friendly treatment coordinator.

Orthodontic treatment options for children

At Cowbridge Dental Specialists we have a wide range of brace choices for children including:

  • Metal braces
  • Functional braces
  • Ceramic braces
  • Invisalign® Teen

Braces for a straight smile

Whatever age your child might be when their orthodontic treatment begins, our range of braces ensures there is a suitable solution for their dental needs and lifestyle. Functional braces are sometimes recommended to our younger patients, particularly if they have an extreme overbite. By adapting to the muscles in the face and jaw, functional braces correct this. They are removable for brushing teeth and activities like playing sports.

Our orthodontists are also able to provide fitted braces for children. We offer traditional metal braces, or ceramic braces for a more discreet option. Both are fixed in place and regularly adjusted until your child’s teeth have moved into their new straight position.

Invisalign® Teen at Cowbridge Dental Specialists

Differing from non-removable brackets and wires, Invisalign Teen straightens teeth with custom-made clear aligners that can be removed for a couple of hours each day, for eating, drinking and playing sports. The series of aligners gradually shift the teeth into their correct position, with the aligners being swapped every week or so.

As the aligners are near-invisible, this orthodontic option is popular among teenagers, as no-one needs to even know they’re having their teeth straightened, unless they tell them!

Unrivalled care with no waiting lists

If the waiting list for your child's treatment on the NHS is simply too long, Cowbridge Dental Specialists allows you to access a specialist opinion, and where needed, provide treatment for your child without delay. No dentist referral is required.

You can book your child in for a free initial consultation and if our skilled treatment coordinator believes they will benefit from specialist care, we’ll schedule their first appointment right away to meet our specialist.

No long waiting lists - we can start at a time that suits you.

Inhalation sedation for young children and teens

Positive dental experiences in the early years lead to a lifetime of happy smiles. Our specialist paediatric dentist and dedicated children’s dentist are trained and experienced in treating young patients. They know well how to calm any butterflies and to raise a smile among even the most anxious of little ones.

At Cowbridge Dental Specialists we’re able to offer safe, gentle inhalation sedation for children, to help them relax and to allow anxious children the time to gain confidence with their paediatric specialist. For teens requiring more complex dental procedures or even orthodontic related extractions, inhalation sedation can also be particularly helpful.
