There are two main types of gum disease – periodontitis and gingivitis. Gingivitis can cause bad breath and bleeding when brushing. Left untreated, this can lead to the more serious type of gum disease, periodontitis. This can ultimately lead to the loss of a tooth or teeth. Gum disease can be treated and reversed though, with a combination of dental hygiene appointments and by taking good care of your oral hygiene at home.
Our dental hygienists here in Cowbridge can see you to provide oral hygiene advice, remove stains, tartar, bacterial deposits, and other debris to leave you with a brighter smile. In relation to gums, the hygienist can advise you on the progression of gum disease, with more advanced conditions needing to be assessed by a dentist or periodontist.
If your hygienist advises you to see a dentist, it is because they feel that it is in the interests of your health and outside their scope of practice.
There are circumstances when a hygienist can’t start treatment, and before they are prepared to continue, insist that a dentist assesses you. This may relate to your medical history and general health, or condition of your mouth, which gives them concern.
Orthodontics is the name used for a specialist branch of dental treatment that corrects tooth and jaw alignment, to give patients straighter teeth. Orthodontic treatment includes the use of teeth-straightening appliances like fixed braces, clear aligners, and retainers.
It's never too late to get the smile you deserve and orthodontics is for adults as well as children. At Cowbridge Dental Specialists we help a high number of adult patients each year to enjoy a new improved, straighter smile.
While clear aligners are available to order online, they are no substitute for the expertise and advice from a specialist orthodontist, such as the team here in Cowbridge. Our orthodontists are trained and certified in clear aligner treatment and we take time to get to know our patients personally, so we can make suitable recommendations for your dental care.
A straighter smile can give you more confidence in your appearance, yet the advantages go much further than this alone. Straight teeth are easier to keep clean so you have a lower risk of developing problems like tooth decay or gum disease. Aligning your bite with braces or clear aligners will also help you to chew and talk comfortably.
Yes, if you want to retain your new smile. It is important to wear your retainer as instructed by your specialist orthodontist. The amount of time you need to wear your retainer will depend on your individual case, with some patients needing to wear one full-time and others at night-time only.
Patients commonly report experiencing slight discomfort when your braces are fitted or adjusted or when they start to wear a new set of clear aligners. This feeling should only last for a couple of days and can be easily controlled with over-the-counter pain relief.
Paediatric dentistry is a specialised branch of dentistry focused on the oral health of infants, children, and teenagers, including those with special healthcare needs.
The British Society of Paediatric Dentistry recommends that children see a dentist by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth appearing.
Specialist paediatric dentists have additional training in child development, behaviour management, and dental care tailored specifically for young patients.
They provide preventive care (like fluoride and sealants), fillings, baby tooth extractions, orthodontic assessments, trauma management, and advice on habits like thumb sucking and diet.
Specialist paediatric dentists are trained in gentle behaviour management techniques to ease anxiety and build trust. We also offer inhalation sedation — a safe and effective way to help children feel calm during treatment.
Yes. Our team has experience in caring for children with a wide range of additional needs, and we tailor our approach to ensure a safe, supportive, and calm environment.
