Endodontics focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of problems affecting the dental pulp - the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels. At Cowbridge Dental Specialists, our registered Specialist Endodontist, Lyndon Meehan delivers advanced root canal treatments for patients referred from other practices and for our own patients.

What is endodontic treatment?

Endodontic (root canal) treatment is often needed when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected. This can cause discomfort, including pain when biting, sensitivity, and swelling in the gum. These issues are usually due to deep decay, previous extensive dental work such as large fillings, crowns, or bridgework, as well as dental injuries from contact sports or cracks in teeth. The goal of endodontic treatment is to effectively address the infection inside the tooth and help you keep your natural tooth, maintaining both your oral health and confidence.

Specialist care for complex cases

Although many root canal treatments are carried out by general dentists, complex cases or where the tooth is of critical importance are best referred and managed by a registered Specialist Endodontist.

This specialist care may include:

  • Retreatment of previously root-filled teeth.
  • Teeth with complex root shapes or calcified (blocked) canals.
  • Root canal treatment on a molar tooth with complex, curved, or narrow roots.
  • Endodontic microsurgery (apicectomy) to clean and seal the tip of the root to resolve a persistent infection.
  • Damage to the pulp or surrounding tooth structure caused by traumatic dental injuries.
  • Paediatric root canal treatment for developing adult teeth that have been damaged by decay or injury.

The benefits of specialist care include:

  • Experience - Our specialist knowledge is supported by the latest research and advanced technology.
  • Greater accuracy – using a powerful microscope allows us to see finer details and anatomy inside the tooth that aren’t visible to the naked eye.
  • Advanced 3D scans – digital imaging gives a clear picture of the roots and surrounding bone, helping us plan treatment precisely.
  • Reliable results – even with complex or previously treated teeth, specialist care greatly improves the chance of success.
  • Saving your natural tooth – our goal is always to preserve your own teeth whenever possible, avoiding the need for an extraction.

Referral and consultation

At Cowbridge Dental Specialists, patient care is provided by a team of GDC-registered specialists, each focused on delivering the highest standard of treatment. We see patients for root canal treatment on a private referral basis only. This means your own dentist will need to send us a referral before we can arrange an appointment for you.

The cost of treatment depends on how complex your case is. We’ll talk this through with you at your consultation and give you a clear written estimate before any treatment starts.

Once we receive your referral, our friendly team will be in touch to arrange your first appointment.

For dentists:

  • Referrals can be made quickly and easily using our online referral form or by emailing/posting a referral letter. Once received, we’ll contact your patient directly to schedule their consultation.
  • We will only address treatments you explicitly request. We do not accept referred patients for routine procedures and will only provide treatment agreed upon with the referring dentist and patient during referral and consultation.
  • We ask that you only refer dentally stable patients or those who are being stabilised through a course of treatment. Patients with multiple untreated carious teeth and unstable periodontal disease may be unsuitable and would not benefit from complex procedures like advanced endodontics.

For Patients:
What Happens on My First Visit?

A full consultation and dental examination will be performed, along with suitable radiographs and, if necessary, a CBCT digital 3d scan of the tooth and surrounding area. This all aids in making an accurate assessment and diagnosis to provide you with the most appropriate advice regarding your tooth.

Lyndon will then take the time to explain and discuss his findings, all the treatment options, and costs with you. He'll gladly answer any questions you have, ensuring you're feeling comfortable and confident about the proposed treatment.

Following this appointment, Lyndon will give you a detailed explanation of the expected treatment and the associated costs. Due to the nature of this type of treatment, the treatment plan and costs may sometimes change depending on the findings during the procedure. These adjustments will always be discussed beforehand, where practical. Sometimes, a virtual consultation can be arranged prior to travel once your dentist provides full details, and in certain cases, treatment may be able to be carried out on the first visit.

What does the root canal treatment process involve

1. Consultation and Assessment
Comprehensive clinical and radiographic examination, including CBCT digital imaging.

2. Anaesthesia and Isolation
Local anaesthetic ensures a pain-free procedure. A rubber dam sheet is used throughout treatment to maintain sterility.

3. Canal Preparation and Cleaning

Infected pulp tissue is removed, and the canals are shaped and disinfected using advanced rotary instrumentation and irrigants.

4. Obturation (Sealing)
The cleaned root canal system is sealed with biocompatible materials to prevent reinfection.

5. Restoration
The referring dentist will provide the definitive restoration (filling or crown) to ensure long-term tooth strength and function.

Treatment is usually completed in 1-2 visits, depending on the specific treatment the tooth requires, with each appointment lasting approximately 90 minutes.

Root canal treatment is successful in about 90% of cases, which is quite reassuring. If, however, your tooth isn't suitable for this procedure or the chances of success are lower, Lyndon will let you know either during your initial consultation or as the treatment moves forward. Sometimes, the alternative might be to remove the tooth. If that happens, there's the option to consider replacing the tooth with an implant, bridge, or partial denture. You can discuss these options with your own dentist or one of our in-house restorative specialists to find the best solution for you.
